We stock British Blue faced Leicester (BFL) and Merino wool in double knit and lace weights, including Superwash. All the yarns are spun in Britain. All our yarns are undyed, of excellent quality and all suitable for using with natural dyes. The yarns are all worsted spun, which makes them smooth and durable and gives great stitch definition. Remember that you need to mordant your wool before dyeing, unless you are dyeing with indigo or woad (read about mordanting).

Which wool yarn should I choose for dyeing?

We stock British Blue faced Leicester (BFL) and Merino wool in double knit and lace weights, some of them Superwash. All the yarns are spun in Britain, are of excellent quality and all suitable for using with natural dyes. The yarns are all worsted spun, which makes them smooth and durable and gives great stitch definition. Remember that you need to mordant your wool before dyeing (unless you are dyeing with indigo or woad, which don’t need mordanting). It is wise to add extra ties before mordanting, to prevent the yarns getting tangled.
  • I want the brightest possible colour – Superwash wool has been treated to abrade the scales of the wool, this makes the wool less likely to felt, and also helps the dye to penetrate better, giving the best possible colour. You have a choice of Superwash BFL DK and Superwash sock wool.
  • I want British wool – you can buy yarns made from Blue-faced Leicester (BFL) wool. We have BFL in DK, Superwash DK and Superwash 4-ply (sock weight) in stock.
  • I want the softest wool - you can buy yarns made from Merino wool. We have Merino DK and lace in stock.
  • I want wool for spinning - click on this link for silk and wool tops for spinning.

Mordanting your wool
Remember that you need to mordant your undyed wool before dyeing (unless you are dyeing with indigo or woad, which don’t need mordanting). It is wise to add extra ties before mordanting, to prevent the yarns getting tangled. Read Mordants for Dyeing for more detail.
