Cochineal dye

Wild Colours - Exciting colours from Natural Dyes

Cochineal (Dactylopius coccus)

Cochineal and lac are the only natural dyes on this website that do not come from plants.

Before microscopes where in use, European scientists argued for a long time whether cochineal was a plant, an animal or a mineral.

We now know that cochineal is produced from female scale insects that live on prickly pear cactus plants (Opuntia or nopal).
